Company History & Background

In 1995 David Somen (whose background includes Oxford University, McKinsey & Co, and Harvard Business School) and Jonathan Somen founded the Virtual Technology Group of companies offering telephone callback services in Africa and dial through telephone services in the UK. After several years of strong growth and a number of acquisitions, the group now renamed the LCR Telecom Group, focused on providing least cost routing telephone services to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in several European countries. Having achieved revenues of $50 million in 1999, and over 10,000 SME customers, LCR was sold in February 2000 to Primus Telecommunications, a $1 billion plus NASDAQ listed company in a transaction worth just under $100 million. Following the sale of LCR, David Somen became the European Managing Director of PRIMUS, responsible for their voice and data business. PRIMUS Europe had revenues of over $300 million and close to 1,000 people. The core skill and experience gained by the LCR management team is in acquiring and retaining SME customers.

Teaming up with Mark Davies, whose background includes IT and Business Development roles at PSINet Europe, VP Business Development at PRIMUS where he met David Somen, and then Consultant IT Director for Verio Europe, David developed an “all in one” solution for SMEs which came to market in early 2002. During the course of this year, the company has installed the product at multiple client locations with great satisfaction for the customers. Existing customers are running at 0.6 support calls per user per month compared to an overall industry average of 1 call per user per month and an SME average of about 2 calls per user per month.

The business is funded by entities related to the Somen family and some selected angel investors. These investors include a company associated with Thomas Hoegh, the owner and Managing Director of Arts Alliance, a prominent technology venture capital fund; David Giampaolo, a successful fitness chain entrepreneur and now MD of VCR / PI Capital; an angel investor network and several of our board members.
